Spruce Magazine’s Best of 2020: Five of Our Favourite Rooms

A Kitchen Designer’s Ideal Kitchen

When designing her own architectural dream home, Atarah Humphreys, knew the kitchen had to be done first, setting the tone for the rest of the space. A designer at Urbana Kitchens, Humphreys placed functionality at the top of her priority list — but added plenty of esthetic flair. Having her family’s young children in mind, Humphreys wanted to keep the materials in this kitchen trendy yet durable. Quartz countertops with waterfall edges allow for easy cleanup, and  a solid panel of back-painted glass was used on the backsplash for simple upkeep. The striking hood fan also doubles as a light fixture.

A Modern Chalet With Old-World Vibes

For this Revelstoke project — featured on the cover of our FallWinter 2020 issue — Victoria interior designer Mari O’Meara created a contemporary home with old- world flair. In the inviting and elegant living room, the windows frame the surrounding mountain range, while coved ceilings, rounded archways and classic Spanish-style touches deliver old-world style. The plaster fireplace feature is a favourite and the mantel’s unique curves and stucco cladding required a specialist from Victoria to complete the work.

A Bedroom for Escape

For this custom build by architect Brian Morris and interior designer Shelley Scales, the aim of the entire project was to instil a sense of calm. The master bedroom offers a soothing tree-top view, and plenty of elegant touches, from the antique French furniture and impressive chandelier to the sumptuous drapes and linens.

A Mountain Lodge Bathroom With Spa Appeal

While this home’s pool room sparked serious envy, especially during lockdown, the master ensuite is one of a kind. The mountain-lodge inspired space — part of a project by architect Pamela Úbeda of Coast and Beam Architecture, builder Tim Agar of Horizon and interior designers Kimberly Williams and Elaine Martel of Kimberly Williams Interiors — offers numerous  luxurious touches, from its sunken soaker tub and stacked natural ledge stone, which frames a rain/steam shower the size of a guest bedroom.

An Entry With Storage and Style

For this heritage renovation, general contractor Jim Town and millwork master David Sheridan from Splinters Millworks made sure to maximize every inch for storage, while maintaining the historic feel of the home. This ‘mudroom” exemplifies this approach, with its abundance of cabinetry, hooks and shoe storage, as well as its muted palette and blue-patterned tile.
