Principal Ines Hanl came to Canada in 2000 with a MA in what would have to be translated as ‘Interior Architecture’ from the German University of Applied Science, Mainz.
A strong analytical mind tempers her exuberant creativity, which results in an out-of-the-box approach to problem solving and very unique design solutions.
Ines is known for her attention to detail, complex and imaginative ideas, a bold mix of colours and materials and the incorporation of artistic techniques.
She says, “This 5’x5’ powder room in a Spanish Colonial style home tickles my senses on multiple levels.”
“We were able to save valuable floor space with the clever use of a pocket door, a wall-hung toilet and an 18” narrow vanity with wall-mount iron spout. In a bold gesture, the vanity spans the width of the room, and its wall-to-wall mirror is decoratively camouflaged as an arch, which doubles-up the tiny space and disguises the lack of a natural light source.”
“The complex blend of textures and colours is not for the faint of heart. This design unapologetically celebrates the owner’s Mexican heritage and her love of Calla lilies. The room is an homage to the iconic Diego Rivera, whose lily prints decorate the walls, and by proxy to his wife, the inspiring artist Frieda Kahlo. Conceptualized around a hand painted Talavera sink with lily motive, the equally hand painted porcelain tile wainscoting is supported by a terracotta- coloured concrete floor tile in an Arabesque design. The custom cabinetry with heavy, locally sourced turned posts features a royal blue stain, rustic metal handles, and a walnut countertop. A handmade iron light fixture from Mexico throws intricate shadows on the yellow saffron walls.”
“On a personal level, the room evokes images of the Yucatan, where my husband and I spent quite some time. The sensuality of the Hacienda-style architecture in that region with its blend of Old-World elegance and Maya and Aztek influences along with bold modern Mexican design elements and vibrant colours speaks to my soul. It also brings forth memories of the precious black kitten we rescued down there and brought back to Canada with us on an adventurous journey.”
