5 Easy Last-Minute Holiday Décor Ideas

How to create that festive feeling in your home

Home decorating ideas for the holidays

Sometimes time just gets away from us and suddenly we are looking down the barrel of the holidays and a house full of guests with nary a sprig of festive holly in sight. If you’ve left your decorating to the last minute, here are five quick ideas for zhuzhing up your home just in the nick of time.

Spring for a Sprig (or Two)

A tree is nice, but really, a few evergreen and/or holly sprigs will still convey that festive feeling. Arrange them in vases or pitchers, lay them on shelves or mantels, even tuck them in and around picture frames or mirrors.

Put a Wreath on It

Whether you choose a natural or faux evergreen, wreaths add a quick festive note to your front door, over the fireplace, hanging on cupboards — or even used as a centrepiece on your table. Just add a few candles and a couple of baubles and you’re done.

Go for the Garland

Wind an evergreen garland though your stair banisters or around a door frame, or drape it along a shelf. Add extra drama by tucking lights, ornaments, bows or pine cones amid the branches. Or consider garlands of shiny silver, gold or copper beads and drape them everywhere.

Make it About the Mantel

If you do nothing else, decorate your mantel and make it the centrepiece of your home. Hang stockings from festive holders and create a pretty display with garlands, lights and ornaments.

Concentrate on the Cozy

Really, really not up for decorating? Just make your home winter-cozy with soft blankets, faux fur throws, plump pillows and warm lighting, a perfect ambience for holiday naps or watching the snow fall, a cup of cocoa in hand.

And from all of us at Spruce magazine, have a happy holiday and a joyful New Year!
